2008 Superman Celebration, Metropolis, IL

Postby KevinLWilliams on Mon Dec 31, 2007 7:05 pm

UPDATE!

The Superman Celebration 2008 was a huge success! We (the Mid-South Cartoonists Assocation, aka Memphis Mafia) were moved to 715 Market Street at the hospitality of the Four Rivers Church. My dear friend Tim Brown (and partner in crime at Inked Monkey Productions) said he over heard that performers and vendors said this was their most successful year ever and they attributed it to the traffic which followed us all there.

But, here are some links (same video both links) with friends of mine and I seen on CBS News:
http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video ... d=4184303n

http://www.veoh.com/videos/v14217331EZm ... offset=220

Murphy Anderson was a special treat to host there, among other great people who were positioned in our building: artists, writers...

Muley hosted the kids' costume contest again with Harry "Joan" Potter, which was preceeded by a puppet show "SuperMule vs. The Party Pooper," which I hope to have online soon. There was a Chistopher Reeve tribute in which Muley sang Five for Fighting's "Superman" before a video reel of great Christopher Reeve shots, and then hosted, with Tim and Lin Workman (also of Inked Monkey Productions) the door prize give aways. It was much fun to be had.

Be sure to visit www.supercollectibles.com to buy some great Superman souveniers that was offered up at the give aways by a super guy, Jamie Reigle.

Looking forward to seeing all my friends in Metropolis next year!

Watch here for more information about dates, but the official website is:
www.supermancelebration.net

It's usually the second full weekend in June. This year it should be the 12th - 15th. Make your reservations now, the hotels fill up fast (although you can stay in Paducah, KY, which is about 10 minutes away).

Pictures from 2007 is in Muley's photo gallery.

All but one year that we’ve attended, Muley has hosted the kids’ costume contest and the Mid-South Cartoonists Association members (also known as the Memphis Mafia) have appeared in panels, at contests, art shows, and there promoting cartoon as art and their own works.

Anniversaries this year as supplied by Lin Workman (www.bushitales.com)
30th Superman Celebration
30th of Superman:The Movie (1978)
60th of Noel Neill as Lois Lane
70th of Superman’s first appearance in Action Comics (1938)

Usually in attendance is:
Kevin L. Williams and Muley the Mule
Steve Stanley (www.Stanleyart.com)
Lin
Martheus and Janet Wade (www.toshigawa.com)
Andrew Chandler (www.Andrewchandler.net)

There are also some great friendships we have forged over the years and are always looking forward to seeing, and glad to see, those good people when we meet up again!

It is definitely a fun festival and I would suggest anyone who can to attend it.

Superman Celebration was a hit! 2008 was quite successful.

Our group was moved down from the community center to 715 Market Street with the hospitality of Four Rivers Church this year. Our friend Tim Brown (of Inked Monkey Productions) said he heard vendors and performers saying this was their most profitable year ever, probably due to the traffic we brought down with us.

We had many other artists and writers with us, and Mr. and Mrs. Murphy Anderson were wonderful people! I feel very blessed to have met them this year, as were all the others who attended.

In the meantime, here is a link to see many of us and our friends on the CBS news:

http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video ... d=4184303n

What'd we do?
Inked Monkey Productions hosted a movie room, showing fan films, movies, and interviews starring your favorite MSCA characters!

Muley was found in a puppet show "SuperMule vs. the Party Pooper," immediately followed by hosting the kids' costume contest (during a DELUGE of rain, thunder, and lightning). Saturday he sang Five for Fighting's "Superman" over a greatly (Inked Monkey Prod.) edited tribute to Christopher Reeve, then co-hosted the door prizes and give aways with Tim Brown and Lin Workman.

MAW Productions had a panel discussion about Jetta: Tales of the Toshigawa. This also included discussions of Muley and Andrew Chandler mentioned his books, Moth and Ethan, and a top secret project he's working on. Stay 'tooned!

Dave Beaty and Micah Stewart, Lin's partners in crime from Team Bushi Tales, were in town this weekend as well, and they had a great panel about peanut butter sandwiches. Just kidding, it was about Bushi Tales, of course!

On Sunday, the costume contest was judged by Dave Beaty, Lin Workman, and Murphy Anderson--that was cool! Following that, the Andersons suited up in their Superman suits to help break the world record of most Superman costumes worn in one place for Guiness World Records, and instead of the 100 needed, there were 120+ folks there!!

It was a great year, and we're definitly looking forward to next year!
So, who's goin'?
