Bank robbed using undie mask

August 22, 2007 12:00am

A NEW Zealand man wore underwear on his head as a disguise to rob a bank where he was a regular customer.

Police used road spikes to halt the high-speed getaway of 59-year-old Kevin Williams, who later told police he had "flipped his lid" and could not explain his actions.

Williams pleaded guilty in the Christchurch District Court to charges of aggravated robbery of a bank at Greymouth, where he was a customer, as well as dangerous driving and failing to stop for the police.

Prosecutors told the court Williams placed men's underpants on his head with a cap on top and entered the bank on July 9 with a piece of metal wrapped in a towel to make it look like he had a gun.

He was handed a bag containing $NZ6,300 ($A5,485) and, pursued by police, drove at speeds of up to 140 km/h before road spikes ended his getaway.

He will be sentenced in November.
